Operating chiefly in the automotive sector, Gefco is one of Europe's largest logistics companies, generating profits of €228m in 2011 against a turnover of €3.78bn. The company is a major railfreight customer in many countries.
RZD says the acquisition would help it to develop transit freight flows on transcontinental routes between Europe and Asia.
The transaction would be subject to approval by competition authorities in the relevant countries.
