A ceremony was held on January 8 to mark the delivery of the fifth train, attended by Mr Nello Musumeci, president of the Sicilian Region, Mr Marco Falcone, councillor for transport of the Sicilian Region, Mr Orazio Iacono, Trenitalia CEO, and Ms Sabrina De Filippis, Trenitalia regional director.

The delivery of the fleet is part of a 10-year service contract signed in May 2018 by the Sicilian Region and Trenitalia, which provides investments of more than €426m.

Of this, approximately €325m is allocated to purchase new trains to enhance regional and metropolitan services on the island. This will make it possible to gradually reduce the average age of the fleet from 24.5 years in 2017 to 7.6 years in 2021.

The new Pop EMU can carry up to 530 passengers, including more than 300 seated, and is equipped with eight bicycle racks. The passenger information system is integrated with Trenitalia’s ground-based infrastructure and offers audio video information and entertainment service through LCD displays visible from all areas of the vehicles. The trains also feature Wi-Fi, 32 digital CCTV cameras, and a real-time passenger counting system.

The new trains are 95% recyclable and consume 30% less energy than the previous Jazz EMUs.
