Under a draft plan seen by the Freiburg newspaper Badische Zeitung, the order includes an option for an additional 100 trains, taking the total order to €2.76bn.

The fleet would have around 30% more capacity than single-deck trains, which is needed to cope with growing passenger numbers, which are expected to double between 2010 and 2030.

The trains, which would be introduced from December 2025, would be used primarily around Stuttgart and the Lake Constance-Upper Swabia region following the opening of the Stuttgart 21 station redevelopment.

BAden-Württemberg announced a market consultation for the possible purchase of more than 200 electric trains for regional passenger services in December 2019.
