The new 2.3m-wide single-direction vehicles will be 45m long and must be at least 75% low floor, with bogies at each end. There must be eight wide doors in the low-floor area. Each vehicle must have at least 100 seats with room for about 160 passengers standing.

The LRVs must meet Swiss federal law concerning passengers with reduced mobility and need to be able to operate on the Basle Transport Authority (BVB) network. They will be authorised by the Swiss Federal Transport Agency (BAV).

The deadline for bids is October with a view to awarding the contract in the third quarter of 2021. BLT plans to put the new vehicles into service at the end of 2023.

The new LRVs will replace 40 Schindler trams dating from the late-1970s and early-1980s.
