LISBON public transport operator Carris has signed a contract with CAF to supply 15 Urbos LRVs, under a tender launched in April 2019. The €43m contract includes five years’ maintenance.

The new LRVs will operate on Line 15, which runs parallel to the mouth of the River Tajo, connecting the main tourist areas in the Portuguese capital, such as Commerce Square, Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, with the city’s major transport hubs.

The five-section uni-directional low-floor articulated LRVs will be 28.5m-long, with a maximum speed of 70km/h. The fleet will be designed to support retrospective installation of future onboard energy systems that support catenary-free operation, such as those supplied by for Birmingham, Luxembourg, Kaohsiung, Zaragoza and Seville.

CAF supplied half of the LRVs purchased by Carris for Line 15 in the mid-1990s, the last order for new vehicles placed by the operator.
