CVAG ordered the LRVs in 2016 at a cost of €35m, with half of the cost met by the German federal government through the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG).

The vehicles will undergo testing and approval, before entering service in mid-2019.

Each 33m-long 2.65m-wide five-section LRV will accommodate 192 passengers, 62 of them seated, and the trams will be the first in Chemnitz to be equipped with passenger Wi-Fi.

The 600V dc bidirectional vehicles will supersede CVAG’s fleet of 10 Tatra T3D-M high-floor trams, which date from 1988 and are now in urgent need of replacement.
