ČD bought 12 Stadler GTW 2/6 DMUs, which were built in 1999 and 2000, at the beginning of 2019 and designated them class 646.

The trains were previously used to operate RE 6 ‘Prignitz Express’ services near Berlin, but were placed into storage after they were replaced by new Alstom Coradia Lint DMUs (class 648) in December 2016.

The first four DMUs were renovated by ČD, with the operator tendering the renovation of the remaining eight trains. This will include the installation of LCD monitors, Wi-Fi, power sockets and upholstered seats. Each unit has capacity for 211 passengers, including 108 seated, a passenger information system and GPS to monitor train movements.
