DB seeks second-hand intercity trains for 2020 timetable

GERMAN Rail (DB) subsidiary DB Long Distance has published a notice in the Official Journal of the European Union seeking a second-hand fleet of 200km/h double-deck EMUs, the first of which must be available for operation on the German network in less than a year.

DB operates a fleet of Bombardier IC2 push-pull double-deck coaches on long-distance services.

According to the notice, the trains must be less than 10 years old with capacity to seat more than 500 passengers.

The fleet will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 SRS 2.3.0 D with upgradability to SRS 3.4.

DB seeks a design which is already authorised for operation in Europe with high reliability and availability.

The first trains must be delivered “shortly after” the start of the 2020 timetable in December 2019.

DB Long Distance is currently suffering a shortage of rolling stock, which will be alleviated in the longer term by the delivery of ICE 4 and Talgo ECx sets. DB plans to expand its long-distance fleet from 273 to 408 trains by 2025.
