The trains will operate on two lines: Cairo - Alexandria (208km) and Cairo - Asyut - Sohag (473km). The third-class coaches with forced ventilation feature 88 seats, and fully comply with safety regulations while providing modern levels of comfort. The coaches have a 40-year life in both inland and coastal environments.
The first 33 coaches delivered to Egypt in July have passed all certification processes in Russia, Hungary, and Egypt. TMH will deliver 175 more of the 1300 coaches from the order by the end of the year.
The coaches have been designed according to ENR’s specifications, with five types set to be delivered:
- 500 third-class vehicles with forced ventilation
- 500 third-class vehicles with air-conditioning
- 180 second-class vehicles with air-conditioning
- 90 first-class vehicles with air-conditioning, and
- 30 second-class vehicles with air-conditioning and a cafeteria.
The third-class coaches entering service feature two toilets and LED lights. The coaches are mounted on cradle-less bogies and have a two-stage leaf-spring suspension system.
Under the contract financed by the Hungarian and Russian export-import banks, 680 of coaches are being produced at the Dunakeszi Vehicle Repair (DJJ) plant in Hungary, which was recently acquired by TMH and its Hungarian partner Magyar Vagon in a 50:50 joint-venture.
The first coaches from Hungary are due to be delivered by the end of the year.
