Elron will now prepare tender documents for a contract to supply four bi-mode multiple units and two EMUs to supplement its fleet of Stadler Flirt trains.

Since the delivery of the Stadler trains six years ago, passenger numbers have increased by more than a third, while demand has more than doubled on routes between key cities.

“Today we are in a situation where all trains are in daily use and it is sometimes difficult to find time for maintenance and repairs,” Aas says.

According to Aas, the expansion of the Elron fleet will enable the introduction of additional fast services from Talinn to Tartu, Narva and Viljandi.

The bi-mode trains are due to be delivered in 2022.
