The LNER HSTs will replace the existing EMR HSTs as the LNER trains were refurbished in 2016, which included fitting new seat covers, tables and carpets and improvements to toilets. However, a new passenger information system will be installed before the trains are delivered to EMR. LNER is replacing its HSTs with Hitachi Rail Azuma trains.

The transfer of the HSTs is only temporary as EMR will also receive four class 180 200km/h DMUs from Hull Trains so that, by the end of 2020, all EMR London St Pancras - Derby/Nottingham - Sheffield inter-city services will be operated by class 222 DMUs and class 180 trains.

These two fleets of trains meet the Passengers with Reduced Mobility Technical Specifications for Interoperability (PRM-TSI) requirements and are more modern than the HSTs which will be withdrawn.

By December 2022, an investment programme worth more than £400m will be completed. This involves the acquisition of 33 new bi-mode (diesel/25kV ac) five-car trains to be supplied by Hitachi Rail for inter-city services and the refurbishment of existing trains
