The N700S is equipped with a lithium-ion battery self-propulsion system, which enables the train to operate catenary-free at low speed in the event of an earthquake or power outage.

According to local media reports the train reached 30km/h during the demonstration run.

Four of the train’s 16 cars are equipped with underfloor batteries.

The N700S fleet is due to enter service in the Tokaido Shinkansen in July 2020, in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, which will be held in Tokyo.
