PV launched a tender in September 2015 for a contract to supply 33 trains and construct maintenance facilities for the fleet, which will be used on services from Riga to Aizkraukle, Tukums, Skulte and Jelgava.

In September 2017 PV announced it had shortlisted CAF, Škoda Vagonka, Stadler Poland, and Talgo for the contract. According to local press reports, PV expects to select a winning bidder this month.

The trains will be delivered between 2020 and 2023, coinciding with the implementation of Latvia’s electrification programme, which will expand the electrified network from 257km to 839km and replace existing dc electrification in the Riga area with ac equipment.
