The order is worth approximately €160m, with the first train due to be delivered within three years.
The new hydrogen trains will be based on Alstom’s Coradia Stream regional train platform, which is already being produced for Italy by Alstom’s main Italian sites.
The hydrogen-powered Coradia Stream for FNM will be equipped with the same fuel cell propulsion technology that was introduced with the Coradia iLint currently operating in Germany, and Alstom says the hydrogen version will match the operational performance of diesel trains, including their range.
The order comes after Alstom and energy infrastructure company Snam signed a five-year agreement in June to develop hydrogen trains in Italy.

These trains, together with the Coradia iLint that have already proven themselves in commercial service in Germany, represent another major step in the transition towards global sustainable transport systems.”
FNM subsidiary Ferrovienord signed a €194m contract with Alstom in November 2010 for 31 Coradia Stream regional trains for operation in the Lombardy Region of Italy. Project development and most of the manufacturing and certification is performed at Alstom’s site in Savigliano, while the onboard signalling systems delivered by the Bologna site.
