Norske Tog will present a tender for the new fleet, which will include an option for up to 170 additional trains. The new trains will initially replace the aging class 69 trains operating on the Skøyen - Ski section of the Østfold line, increasing capacity from 570 passengers per train to up to 850 passengers.

The capacity increase is needed to meet an expected rise in demand, while the new fleet will also improve reliability.

Norske Tog plans to launch the tender in early 2020, with the contract expected to be signed at the end of 2020 or the start of 2021. The first train is due to be commissioned from December 2024, with the fleet phased into operation during 2024.

Infrastructure manager Bane Nor will also undertake infrastructure improvements, worth an estimated NKr 1.6bn to prepare for the new fleet, including lengthening platforms and preparing stabling facilities.
