NS awarded CAF a €510m contract in December 2015 to supply 118 articulated EMUs based on the company’s Civity platform. The order comprises 68 three-car sets (NS class 2300) and 50 four-car trains (class 2400). The trains are being assembled at CAF’s plant at Beasain in northern Spain and deliveries will be completed next year.

The new trains will expand the commuter and regional fleet, providing much-needed additional capacity, while enabling NS to begin withdrawing the two-car first-generation SGM Sprinters built between 1975 and 1983.

The SNGs have been operating in passenger service between Haarlem and The Hague Central since mid-November but are still running on a temporary authorisation from the Dutch Environmental and Transport Inspectorate (ILT), which has not yet granted a full Authorisation to Place in Service (APS).
