Under the terms of the agreement, AnsaldoBreda acquired the V250 trains from NS and repaid the operator €125m. In addition, the Italian manufacturer agreed to pay NS up to €21m if it found a buyer for the surplus trains.

In August 2017, Trenitalia agreed to purchase 17 of the 19 V250 trains built for NS and Belgian National Railways (SNCB) for services within Italy.

The additional payment takes NS’ loss on the €213m order down to €67m.

The fleet entered service on HSL South five years later than scheduled in December 2012, but the trains were withdrawn just 40 days later due to safety-critical failures.
