AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has placed an order with Siemens Mobility Austria for an additional 27 Desiro ML EMUs, continuing its fleet renewal programme.

ÖBB previously ordered 246 Desiro ML trains with more than 200 already in service throughout Austria.

The new trains will offer more space, comfort and convenience on ÖBB Inner-Alpine routes when they enter service in 2025.

The 75m-long three-car trains will have a maximum speed of 160km/h, with seating capacity for around 220 passengers. The trains will offer up to 24 bicycle spaces, and will have two toilets, one of which will be accessible with a baby-changing table, and two wheelchair spaces.

The cars will have six doors per side, air-conditioning, power outlets for each row of seats, a real-time passenger information display system, and free Wi-Fi.

The fleet will feature Siemens’ trainguard 100/200/300 onboard ETCS equipment, and ÖBB’s onboard Railnet portal to provide internet access for passengers.
