AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has ordered an additional 20 four-car Desiro ML EMUs from Siemens for operation in the Tyrol region. The trains will be dual voltage: 15kV 16.7Hz and 25kV ac.
The new trains will replace a cancelled order for Talent 3 EMUs from Bombardier (now Alstom). ÖBB originally ordered 19 dual-voltage Talent 3 trains and six multisystem Talent 3 sets for cross-border services to Italy but the order was halted due to approval issues. No decision has so far been taken on replacement of the latter.
Siemens will start delivery of the Desiro sets in spring 2023 and the order will be completed by mid-2024.
