The order is part of a framework contract up to 200 Desiro ML trains, which was awarded to Siemens in 2010.

Prior to exercising the latest option, ÖBB had placed orders for a total of 70 regional (class 4744) and 95 S-Bahn (class 4746) Desiro ML sets. Deliveries will be completed by mid-2019.

The latest order for 24 class 4746 sets will enable ÖBB to withdraw all remaining class 4020 EMUs, which are primarily used on Vienna S-Bahn services. The fleet of 120 class 4020 sets was built by SGP between 1978 and 1987 and the trains are now steadily being withdrawn as more Desiro MLs enter service.
