The first 101 Desiro ML ÖBB Cityjet EMUs have been in service in eastern Austria since 2015, followed by a second call for 64 trains in 2016, and an additional 24 trains ordered in 2019. The final batch of trains is due to be delivered by the end of 2021.

The trains are equipped with Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, power outlets, tables and other amenities that were previously only available on long-distance trains.

The 11 new trains will be built by Siemens in Krefeld and the ÖBB Technical Service in Vienna Jedlersdorf. The fleet will be delivered equipped with ETCS, while the Desiro ML ÖBB Cityjets already delivered will also be equipped with ETCS by the end of 2023.

The doors of the new Desiro ML ÖBB Cityjets have been optimised to improve boarding and alighting to reduce dwell times at stations to ensure high punctuality in Vienna’s S-Bahn network.

Each Desiro ML is 75m long, and has a top speed of 160km/h.

The 11 newly-ordered trains are designed to be converted to battery hybrid technology, in the same way as the 24 Desiro ML trains ordered in March 2019, which will enable operation on non-electrified lines.
