The fleet will be used in Salzburg and Upper Austria to fulfil the recently signed PSO contracts for these regions.

The EMUs should be able to operate under 15kV 16.7Hz and 25kV 50Hz electrification, and should be approved for operation in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.

ÖBB intend to purchase or lease the trains on a 10-year term with an option for maintenance included in the contract. The new sets must be operational from December 1 2023 to avoid penalties included in the PSO contracts.

The closing date for expressions of interest is January 13, after which ÖBB will begin negotiations which may lead to a tender process. Interested manufacturers need to provide proof that they can meet the delivery deadline.

The tender is the result of continuing problems with delivery of Talent 3 EMUs on order from Bombardier, which is heavily delayed.
