The trial will enable ÖBB to compare the performance of hydrogen and battery-electric trains. A battery-equipped Siemens class 4746 Cityjet EMU is currently undergoing trials on the Austrian network.
ÖBB has previously announced it intends to eliminate all carbon dioxide emissions from train operations by 2035 and will look into alternatives to the full electrification of the network.
