PKP Intercity has signed a contract with H Cegielski-Fabryka Pojazdow Szynowych in Poznan, Poland, to modernise 90 type 111A and 141A intercity coaches over a period of two and a half years. The Zlotys 495m ($US 115.9m) contract includes maintenance of the upgraded coaches.

Under the contract, the second-class coaches will be fitted with improved seating, air-conditioning, a passenger information system, CCTV, automatic doors, closed-loop toilets and braille markings for passengers with limited vision. The bogies will be replaced to enable the coaches to operate at up to 160km/h.

The first refurbished coaches are due to re-enter service early next year.

PKP Intercity has awarded more than Zlotys 6bn worth of contracts under its fleet investment programme, of which Zlotys 1.75bn has been awarded to H Cegielski-Fabryka Pojazdow Szynowych. The manufacturer is currently delivering 81 new coaches for PKP, 27 of which have already been delivered with the remainder due by the end of this year.
