POLISH operator PKP Intercity is tendering for 38 seven-car push-pull double-deck trains with 45 multi-system locomotives.

The order is one of the larger rolling stock projects included in the Polish government’s updated Zloty 19bn ($US 5.17bn) investment programme which aims to have the entire PKP Intercity fleet either new or modernised by 2030.

The trains will have a 200km/h top speed and are planned for operation on routes including Warsaw - Łódź and Kraków - Katowice.

“Our investments in modern rolling stock does not slow down even for a moment,” says Mr Marek Chraniek, president of PKP Intercity. “We are preparing for a constant increase in the number of passengers and such a train will allow for the comfortable transport of several hundred passengers at the same time.”

Prospective bidders have until August 10 to register their interest, and it’s planned to place an order in the first quarter of 2022 with deliveries to be completed by May 31 2026.

The contract will also include six years maintenance for the 45 locomotives.

The operator announced last month that €482.5m had been earmarked for the push-pull trains and locomotives.

This order follows PKP Intercity issuing a tender last month to buy 63 multi-system locomotives capable of 200km/h, with an option for a further 32 units.
