The tender comprises a firm order for 43 trains for Public Service Obligation (PSO) services, with options for up to 62 additional sets.

The order will include electric and electro-diesel trains. Each train will be formed of between three and five cars and capable of a maximum speed of 200km/h on electrified lines and 160km/h in diesel mode.

The winning bidder will maintain the trains in a joint venture with Renfe for a minimum of 15 years and the contract will include an option to extend the maintenance term.

The minimum value of the contract is estimated at €750.9m, increasing to a maximum of €1.32bn if all vehicle and maintenance options are exercised.

Deliveries are due to begin within 42 months of contract signing.

Renfe says more than 50% of its regional fleet has reached the end of its useful life or is approaching life-expiry.
