ALSTOM will build 36 eight-car Metropolis trains capable of carrying 2600 passengers for Sao Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company (CPTM) lines 8-Diamond and 9-Emerald.

The trains are part of a package of improvements and obligations agreed by the ViaMobilidade Consortium, comprising the CCR Group and Ruas Investimento e Participações, in April this year as part of its contract to operate and maintain both lines for 30 years.

The stainless steel trains are the same model as the 9000 series fleet that currently operates on CPTM lines 12-Sapphire and 13-Jade. They are expected to have a service life of more than 40 years.

The new trains will have passenger counting, dynamic line maps, monitors and surveillance as well as accommodation for passengers with reduced mobility.

The trains will be built at Alstom’s facility in Taubaté, in the state of Sao Paulo, where a new production line will be created for the order. This will double the site’s capacity and contribute towards the creation of more than 500 jobs. The site will also manufacture Metropolis sets for Bucharest and Taipei.

The two lines carried more than one million passengers per day prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 41.6km Line 8 has 22 stations connecting Júlio Prestes and Amador Bueno while Line 9 is 32km with 18 stations connecting Osasco to Grajaú.
