SLOVENIAN Railways (SŽ) has started tendering for the purchase of 20 bi-mode trains as either three-car bi-mode trains suitable for operation under diesel power or under 3kV dc electrification, three-car DMUs capable of future conversion into bi-mode trains.

If proposing DMUs, bidders must demonstrate that conversion would be feasible and effective, with the cost of conversion not to exceed 15% of total contract value.

The new trains should be capable of operating in Croatia and Austria, including on the routes from Slovenia to Villach, Klagenfurt, Bleiburg and Graz.

The contract will include spare parts, maintenance equipment, documentation and software, as well as training SŽ staff to operate and maintain the new fleets.

The tender will be run as open competition bidding process, and price is not the only criterium for judging offers. Bids must be submitted to SŽ by September 21.

Separately, infrastructure manager SŽ-Infrastruktura has called tenders for up to 25 twin-axle special-purpose wagons for the transport of infrastructure maintenance equipment and materials.

The wagons must meet European Union (EU) noise reduction standards and be suitable for operation on routes throughout the EU.

Price will not be the sole criterion for assessing bids, which must be submitted to SŽ-Infrastruktura by September 12.
