SNCF Voyageurs has signed a five-year framework contract with Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions provider Stimio, France, for the supply of connected devices to be fitted to TER, Intercité, TGV and freight trains.
The contract signed with SNCF Voyageurs’ rolling stock department covers the exclusive supply of more than 12,500 IoT Marti sensors and Meli communication gateways.
The railway-certified connected devices are designed to monitor various aspects of the train, including monitoring the water level for toilets, detecting the windshield washer level, door supervision, or monitoring air-conditioning pressure, alongside a range of other use cases being investigated.
Stimio says the Marti and Meli devices enable rolling stock to be upgraded with technology that was not available when they were manufactured, with the data transmitted in real-time via a long-range and low-frequency LoRaWAN network.
“Devices designed by Stimio play a key role in the quick identification and early correction of malfunctions occurring on rolling stock,” says Mr Thierry Fort, director of engineering for SNCF Voyageurs’ rolling stock department. “These connected devices allow us to prevent failures and guide maintenance actions rather than sticking to a preventive maintenance schedule.”
