The order marks the second contract won by Stadler in Canada, after it was awarded a contract to supply 10 double-deck passenger coaches to the Rocky Mountaineer in 2016.

The four-car diesel-electric Flirt trains have been specifically designed to run in extremely cold climates. The vehicles will be built at Stadler’s facility in Bussnang, Switzerland, before delivery to Ottawa from mid-2021 where they will undergo extensive testing.

The 120km/h trains are equipped with four 480kW diesel engines, with parts of the traction equipment system and engines housed in power pack units.

The trains comply with emission standard Tier4 final, North American Track Class IV, ADA and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (Aoda) standards and the North American fire safety standard NFPA 130.

The Trillium Line extension is a PPP project which will lengthen the existing line by 16km and add eight new stations, including a link to Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
