STADLER will build 12 freight locomotives for Spanish state operator Renfe after a contract worth €85.5m was placed with the manufacturer.
The locomotives will be built at the Stadler Rail Valencia factory within 43 months and will be used on the new Pajares bypass between Leon and Oviedo in northern Spain. The first locomotives are expected to enter traffic at the end of 2022.
Stadler would not confirm which locomotive design would be supplied, telling IRJ that because Renfe is a public company it could not confirm details until the contract is signed at the end of the standstill period.
Reports suggest the locomotives will be Euro6000s, which are currently the most powerful locomotives used in Spain. They are a dual-voltage design capable of running on ac or dc power.
