THALES has completed the installation of ETCS onboard equipment on 50 diesel locomotives supplied to State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

Work was undertaken following the signing of contract in January 2022 with Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Qishuyan for Thales to supply its RailBot ETCS onboard unit.

Thales says the equipment’s modular design provided flexibility during installation, a key advantage for a retrofit project.

This is the sixth rail project that Thales has undertaken in Thailand, but the first that has been entirely focused on supplying onboard equipment.

Thales previously supplied ETCS onboard equipment to CRRC for eight shunting locomotives for the S-Bahn network in Berlin. The signalling supplier says it also worked with CRRC to install ETCS equipment on three locomotives operated by Leo Express of the Czech Republic.

“Our technology will enable [SRT’s] infrastructure capacity to be increased safely and reliably,” says Mr Hannes Boyer, managing director of Thales Main Line Signalling.
