The project was launched in autumn 2016 and test operations began in March 2018, covering 150,000km. BMVI contributed €18m to the project, with DB Cargo and VTG each providing €4.5m.

The results of the project show a 3-8% reduction in traction energy consumption, a 3-6dB(A) reduction in noise levels and lower lifecycle costs.

“Our collaboration showed how rail transport can be made quieter, more cost-effective and more energy-efficient,” says VTG CEO Dr Heiko Fischer. “We are now carrying these findings over into our operations. The newly developed wagon types have been added to our regular rental portfolio and will be available to our customers in the future. That means we are making rail freight traffic even more attractive."

DB Cargo has already decided to 300 wagons of two designs including the innovative car transporter and the BraCoil multi-functional flat wagon for steel transport.

“We are continuing to invest in our fleet and opting for flexible freight wagons,” says DB Cargo CEO Dr Roland Bosch. “They will improve the quality of our transport and make rail more economical, while also adding value for our customers."
