The new operation will serve destinations in the Czech Republic as well as connections between Northern and Western European ports and Central and South East Europe. Until now DB Cargo has relied on other operators to haul trains in the Czech Republic, but the acquisition of the majority of shares in freight operator AWT by PKP Cargo is said to have prompted the company's move into the Czech market.

DB Cargo Czechia is based in Ostrava in the North East of the Czech Republic and will use some of the 32 class 189 quadruple-voltage electric locomotives modified for operations in the country.
