The aid will take the form of direct grants to rail freight operators and is intended to relieve rail freight transport companies of part of the cost of using marshalling yards and train formation facilities. The scheme will run until November 30 2025.

Single wagon load accounts for around a quarter of rail freight services in Germany, forming an important element of the logistic chain and playing a key role in connecting important industrial sites.

The EC says single wagon load transport also supports other forms of rail freight transport, such as unaccompanied piggyback and block trains.

The measure approved by the EC is part of the German Federal Government’s Climate Action Programme 2030 and is intended to facilitate the shift from road to rail.
