Tonne-km reached 129.4 billion in 2017, 0.8% or 128.3 million tonne-km more than the previous record, with one tonne of cargo transported an average of 323km, compared with 322km in 2016.
The statistics are based on information supplied by companies operating freight services on the public rail network, regardless of their size. Volumes for rail infrastructure construction and maintenance is not included.
