The objective is to use existing components and technologies to achieve reductions in noise and improvements in energy efficiency, with a view to accelerating the deployment of innovative wagon bearings that are more economical and quieter than those previously employed.

At least three different types of wagon are required, in particular wagon types which will maximise the impact of noise and energy saving measures. The overall objective of this contract is to demonstrate what is currently feasible and economic in combination with generally-available technologies. The programme will last for 30 months.

A project working group will be set up for the evaluation period working with TÜV Rheinland Consulting for engineering support, an independent company responsible for measuring the noise emissions and energy consumption which has yet to be selected, and another contractor to provide the following services:

  • design, implementation and deployment of the innovative freight wagons
  • preparing and implementing the necessary approval for commissioning
  • preparation and implementation of comprehensive field testing of the new wagons under real operating conditions, and
  • the economics of the project.

The deadline for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is April 21.
