The port handles 60% of Sweden's container traffic, but rail capacity is constrained by the 10km single-track connection to the mainline. Trafikverket plans to eliminate this bottleneck by constructing a new 2km tunnel beneath the district of Eriksberg, and expanding the Älvsborg bridge from one to two tracks.

Sweco's contract is worth more than SKr 20m ($US 3.16m) and the assignment will be completed in mid-2014.
