The report released by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) says the increase in freight traffic on the SGR from 1.147 million tonnes in 2017 to 3.544 million tonnes last year led to growth in freight revenues by 227% from $US 30m to $US 97m.

“Similarly, passenger journeys increased by 45% from 3.1 million 2017 to 4.5 million in 2018,” the Director General of the KNBS, Mr Zachary Mwangi, commented in the report.

Mwangi said the new era of SGR passenger service saw Kenya Railways Corporation earnings double to $US 17m in 2018.
