CARGOBEAMER will launch a new Calais - Domodossola freight service on October 4.

THE launch of the train, which connects northern France the Swiss-Italian border, follows the opening of a terminal in Calais and the introduction of a Calais - Perpignon train, hauled by German Rail (DB) subsidary Euro Cargo Rail, in early-July.

Four trains a week will run during the initial launch period, with six trains a week running from December.

The new train will be operated by French National Railways (SNCF) subsidiaries Captrain France and Captrain Germany between Calais and Basle, via Saarbrücken, then by BLS Cargo in Switzerland and Italy. The CargoBeamer technique allows the transport of both cranable and non-cranable semi-trailers as well as containers, hazardous goods, P400, refrigerated and bulk trailers.

Work on a new €31m intermodal terminal in Calais began in July 2020. The new terminal is served by CargoBeamer wagons carrying HGV semitrailers and will serve both the port of Calais and the Eurotunnel freight shuttle terminal.
