DUISPORT, the owner and operator of the port of Duisburg, and Polish technology company Nevomo have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the possibility of introducing Nevomo’s MagRail technology within the port to expand capacity.

Nevomo says its hyperloop-inspired passive magnetic levitation technology is interchangeable with existing rail operations and infrastructure, meaning maglev trains and conventional rolling stock can operate on the same lines. The MagRail concept supports full automation and is catenary-free.

“Nevomo’s MagRail technology is a perfect fit to achieve our strategic goals at Duisport,” says Mr Alexander Garbar, head of corporate development and strategy at Duisport. “Increasing the capacity and flexibility of the existing network by maintaining full interoperability with existing operations is crucial to our business.”

Nevomo signed a similar MoU with Italian Rail Network (RFI) in June 2021 and is working to test and verify the technology on a test track in Bologna San Donato. The supplier is also installing MagRail system components on a test track in Nowa Sarzyna, Poland.
