The World Bank is already contributing €186.6m to the Rijeka Gateway project which is currently underway. The objective is to increase capacity at the port to meet growing demand and to develop it into an intermodal centre for Central Europe over the next three to four years.

RCG currently operates regular conventional and intermodal freight trains to and from the port carrying almost 1 million tonnes annually between Rijeka and Austria, including materials such as ore and coal. RGC now plans to establish a link between its Bilk terminal in Budapest and Rijeka.

“The port of Rijeka is becoming increasingly important for the Central European economy,” says Mr Denis Vukorepa, director of Rijeka Port Authority. “The cooperation with Rail Cargo Group, one of the largest European rail transport companies, is very important for us.”
