In January, SBB Cargo agreed a four-year contract extension with Swiss Post, continuing the operation of postal trains on the Swiss network until the end of 2022. By the end of the extension the company will operate around 60 postal trains across the Swiss network each day.

SBB Cargo has also signed a contract extension with Germany’s largest rail freight operator DB Cargo for the operation of transalpine freight services from Mannheim, Singen and Basle to Chiasso on the Swiss-Italian border.

The company will operate around 130 freight trains a week on behalf of DB Cargo, crossing the Alps via the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

The extension begins in December and runs until the end of 2022.

SBB Cargo says the efficient use of train crew and rolling stock was a key focus in the negotiations with DB Cargo.
