The project includes extending sidings, track renovation, construction of extra sidings and new points. The project also covers subsidiary improvements such as building retaining walls, revamping embankments, extending underpasses for road traffic and erecting noise barriers.
The work is being financed through Switzerland’s ZEB programme for the future development of railway infrastructure
The work is expected to be completed in March 2020, in time for the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel and completion of the 4m corridor at the end of that year. It is one of around 25 construction projects being realised on the north-south axis between Basle and Chiasso.
SBB Cargo has temporarily relocated its San Paolo operations to Biasca for the duration of the works.
