Freight performance rose by 10% year-on-year to 3.89 billion net tonne-km as SŽ recorded growth in both domestic and international traffic.
2013 was also a good year for SŽ's passenger business, with ridership increasing by 883,000 to 16.4 million passengers. This is attributed to an increase in the number of younger people travelling by train, a result of new government incentives to encourage train travel.
SŽ says that it achieved growth last year despite short-term disruption to its operations caused by engineering work on key routes.
