The new service provides a connection between Laem Chabang Port on the Gulf of Thailand and Nong Khai container port.

The 1.1km bridge opened in 1994, and carries two road lanes and a single metre-gauge track, as well as two footpaths. Up to now, the line has been used by four passenger services a day. The freight service is operated by coupling wagons to the end of the passenger trains.

The line is potentially an important link with the expected launch of China - Laos and China - Thailand freight services following the completion of the China - Laos railway, which is expected in December 2021.
