The funds are to be used to procure locomotives and repair tracks. A large proportion of the PR locomotive fleet is out of service due to lack of maintenance, although the National Logistics Cell has been awarded a contract to repair some of them. PR has also been steadily reducing the number of passenger trains it operates as it tries to grapple with its worsening financial situation.
Pakistan government releases funds for troubled railway
THE Pakistan government will inject Rs 4bn ($US 46m) into Pakistan Railways (PR) in an attempt to revive its railfreight business, which has almost ceased to operate with only one scheduled freight train a day.
