Work to stabilise the tunnel damaged by the earth movements has been underway since mid-August with a 50m section of the tunnel's eastern tube being filled with 10,500m3 of concrete.

The tunnel was being constructed relatively close to the surface in sedimentary rock which was being frozen and stabilised with grouting prior tunnelling.

Due to open in 2022, the 16km Rastatt avoiding line is part of the 182km Karlsruhe - Basle upgrading project to provide a four-track rail connection from central Germany to Switzerland and the new Alpine base tunnels.
