EIB finances Tampere light rail project

THE European Investment Bank has agreed to provide Tampere with a €150m loan to finance the first phase of the Finnish city’s light rail network.

Due for completion in 2021, the €238.8m Section 1 comprises a 15km Y-shaped line running east from Pyynikintori in the city centre to Hervantajärvi and Tampere University Hospital with a depot in Hervanta.

The project is being implemented by the Tram Line Alliance, which is formed the City of Tampere, YIT Construction Services, VR Track and Pöyry Finland. Rolling stock will be supplied by Škoda Transportation subsidiary Transtech.
