ÖBB awarded Siemens a framework contract for up to 200 Vectrons in January 2017. The contract includes an initial firm order worth around €120m for 30 ETCS-equipped multi-system locomotives, which will be certified for operation in Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia.

A second order for 17 more class 1293s is due to be signed later this month.

The first locomotive will now undergo a programme of testing and driver training before entering traffic in May, when the delivery of series locomotives will also begin.

The locomotives will be based at Villach and Innsbruck depots for use on international freight services.
